#RamadanTips – Episode 8: Secrets of Fasting
Let’s talk fasting – the act of fasting is more than mere abstention from food, drink, and intimacy with one’s spouse. We are aware of this; however, the daylight hours of Ramadan remain drawn-out moments of thirst and hunger.
Fulfilling the outward aspects of fasting makes the act valid. Is that it? Shouldn’t we be concerned beyond that?
Imam Al-Ghazali, in his book Ihya’a Ulumu Deen, describes the three levels of fasting.
Level 1: The Fast of the Ordinary
The lowest level of fasting involves refraining from what you are supposed to refrain from, such as eating, drinking, intimate relations.
Level 2: The Fast of the Special
At this level, you not only fast from what is refrained but also observe ethical fasting. Your eyes, ears, and other body parts also fast.
Level 3: The Fast of the Elite
The third level of fasting involves physically, spiritually, and intellectually engaged with God without breaking consciousness from this state for even a moment. Fasting with your heart and mind.
The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Allah said, ‘Every good deed of Adam’s son is for him except fasting; it is for Me, and I shall reward for it.’
This Ramadan, let’s be mindful and aware of how we utilize and take account of each moment.
The act of fasting includes much more than abstaining from food and drinks.
💎 Let your eyes fast – choose what you look at.
💎 Let your mouth fast – control what you say, from gossip, foul language, backbiting, slandering.
💎 Let your ears fast – abstain from listening to things that you should not.
Mindfully holding ourselves accountable for each moment, we can turn every single minute into an act of worship. Allowing us to reconnect with Allah (SWT) in a very empowering, fulfilling, and meaningful way.
It’s just a few weeks for Ramadan. Get in the habit of fasting and start fasting on Mondays and Thursdays.
